Pinocchio

Pinocchio

This article is about the original Carlo Collodi fictional character. For other uses, see Pinocchio (disambiguation).
Original art by Enrico Mazzanti

Pinocchio (pronounced [piˈnɔkːjo] in Italian) is a fictional character that first appeared in 1881, in The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, and has since appeared in many adaptations of that story and others. Carved from a piece of pine by a woodcarver named Geppetto in a small Italian village, he was created as a wooden puppet, but dreamt of becoming a real boy. The name Pinocchio is Italian for "Pine Eye".

Storyline

Inventor Gepetto creates a wooden marionette called Pinocchio. His wish that Pinocchio be a real boy is unexpectedly granted by a fairy. The fairy assigns Jiminy Cricket to act as Pinocchio's "conscience" and keep him out of trouble. Jiminy is not too successful in this endeavor and most of the film is spent with Pinocchio deep in trouble.

Chronological
I found this very beautiful film with great direction and beautiful art direction. There are many references to the fantastic world of Fellini, but originality Benigni is saved. I think American children will not understand some special caracter Italy, Carabinieri and a lot of affection (kissing a lot of men, for example) but the poem is something that is the same all over the world. Roberto Benigni might be too old to play the role of Pinocchio, but it will be interesting to see in which way the American people can receive forgiveness continuously with "Fata Turchina": a very common practice even in Catholic countries.
